This report concerns the present situation of fur farming in Poland and across the world A similar report was published by the Western Centre for Social and Economic Research at the beginning of 2018. In recent years, there have been at least three legislative initiatives to ban fur farming in Poland – all of them unsuccessful. The analysis of data covering the period from 2004 onwards allows us to conclude that we are currently facing a crisis in the fur industry, which significantly affects the position of this sector in the countryof country. There has been a serious, decline in both the number of pelts sold, and the proceeds from Polish exports of the commodity. The number of farms has also decreased significantly, and so has the industry’s impact on the country’s socio-economic position (which was never as great as some studies suggested). At the same time, the vast majority of the public opinion in Poland has been calling for a ban on fur farming for several years. In Europe, country after country has been banning the operation of such farms, which has not always been followed by any compensation payments to farmers.
